ST. PETER — Led by champion Nick Rydell at 112 pounds, seven St. Peter Saints placed in the top three in their weight classes Saturday in the South Central Conference Wrestling Tournament.
Rydell finished 2-0, pinning Fairmont’s Joe Weber in the first round in 36 seconds and decisioning Waseca’s Hunter Pehrson in the championship match 10-6. Rydell earned his 60th career win in his opening match.
Runner-up honors went to St. Peter’s Jesse Anderberg at 103, Jim Wilkins at 152 and Brandon Zabel at 285. All finished 1-1.
“We had a good tourney as far as the individuals went, four in the finals with one champion,” St. Peter coach Keith Hanson said.
Anderberg won a 5-4 decision over Isaac Carreon of St. James in round one and lost to Tanner Pehrson of Waseca 10-5 in the championship match.
Wilkins won by a fall in 51 seconds in the second round over Carson Richard of Fairmont and lost the title match to Daniel Eckhardt of Blue Earth Area 3-1.
Ranked fifth in the state in Class AA, Brandon Zabel pinned Andre Brandts of St. James in the first round in 31 seconds and lost 4-2 in overtime to third-ranked Jake Lee of BEA in the finals. “Zabel’s overtime loss was a good match,” Hanson said. “Either guy could have finished the takedown at the end for the win. Lee from BEA just had a little better scramble at the end.”
St. Peter also earned three third places with Ashton Bartlett 1-1 at 130, Tyler Chouanard 1-1 at 160 and Ricky Felty 2-1 at 171.
Bartlett won in the second round over Nic Remund of Waseca 15-8 and lost in the third round to eventual champion Brady Stauffer of St. James by a fall in 27 seconds.
Chouanard was pinned in round three by eventual champion Sam Milbrett of Waseca in 1:47 and came back to place third by pinning Sam Koch of St. James in 2:17.
Felty pinned Robert Eggersluess of New Ulm in round two in 2:49, got pinned by Matt Dahl of St. James in round three in 1:17 and pinned Briar Bonin of Fairmont for third place in 1:29.
Fourth places for St. Peter went to Dakota Haslip 1-2 at 119, Andy Bushell 1-2 at 125 and Brian Zabel 0-2 at 135.
Finishing fifth and 0-2 for St. Peter were Jared Shandy at 189 and Paul Bense at 215.
Waseca won the team championship with 217.5 points and five individual titles. BEA finished second with 204.5 points, followed by St. James 195.5, St. Peter 158.5, Fairmont 102 and New Ulm 102.
“Due to a miscommunication and improper procedures, New Ulm had to be pulled from the tournament, therefore they scored 0 points,” Hanson said. New Ulm wrestled the first few rounds but was disqualified because it had not weighed-in its wrestlers on site.
