Strong winds, more snow plague area
The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the State Patrol advise no travel in south central Minnesota Monday evening until conditions improve sometime Tuesday.

The Minnesota State Patrol investigated 359 crashes statewide, 57 that included injuries.

By 10 p.m., area schools delayed two hours included Sibley East, St. James, Truman, USC, Waseca, WEM, Windom, BEA, Butterfield-Odin, Fairmont, GHEC, JWP, Lafayette Charter, LCWM, Madelia (closed), Maple River, Martin County West, MVL, Montgomery-Lonsdale, Mountain Lake and New Ulm.

Strong winds are expected to result in dramatically reduced visibility and many road surfaces remain snow and ice compacted.

No interstate or state highway closures are anticipated at this time, however closures may become necessary is conditions worsen.

Mn/DOT snow plow operators are out in force, but are not making significant progress in some areas of heavier snowfall.

Mn/DOT would like to remind motorists to follow safe winter driving practices if it's necessary to travel.

* Always use seat belts.

* Adjust speed to road and weather conditions.

* Avoid using cruise control.

* Turn on headlights when it is sleeting or snowing.

St. Peter Public Schools dismissed early on Monday, Feb. 8. Students at South Elementary left at 10:30 a.m., students at North were out at 10:40 a.m. and Middle/High School pupils checked out at 10:50 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of Minnesota. Included in that is an area within lines drawn from the southern border, to Marshall, to the western border, to Fergus Falls, to Brainerd, to Minneapolis-St. Paul to southeast of Rochester.
