St. Peter One Act Play is state bound
ST. PETER — For just the fourth time in school history, the St. Peter One-Act Play cast & crew will be making a trip to the Minnesota State One-Act Play Festival this weekend after winning the Section 2A title on Saturday.

“We are so excited about going to state and I’m so happy for the cast and crew because all their hard work has paid off,” St. Peter One-Act director Lyn Vavreck said. “The section’s plays were all very well done and impressive.”

The Saints’ performance of “Blue Lila Rising” took top honors out of six entrants in the Section 2A Contest, held at Le Sueur-Henderson High School on Saturday. This is the first time since 1996 that St. Peter has qualified for the state festival. The Saints also qualified for state in 1958 and 1995, with the school earning star ratings in 1995 and 1996.

Maple River was second at the Section 2A contest followed by Le Sueur/Henderson, St. James, Holy Family Catholic and Mankato Loyola.

This year’s Minnesota State Class 1A One-Act Play Festival will take place Friday at The O’Shaughnessy Auditorium, St. Catherine University in St. Paul.

According to the Minnesota State High School League website, the first performance for Class 1A is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. with St. Peter slated to begin their show at 11:45 a.m.

“I started working with Colleen Bell on the plays in 2004 when these seniors were seventh graders in the middle school play ‘The Smartest Woman in the Kingdom’,” Vavreck said. “I look back at how far these they've come since then.

“Even though a lot of hard work has been put into this play, it’s a culmination of the experiences and the people that have encouraged them all along the way. Starting with their parents who let them dress up and pretend when they were little kids.

“We’re very blessed to have a strong program in a time when funding for the arts is being whittled away. Thanks to the school and community for their support.”
