Public asked about funding sports teams

So, what do you think?

Should taxpayer dollars be used to help build a new Minnesota Vikings stadium, or not?

It’s largely a question of principle more than pain to the pocketbook. But the ramifications run pretty deep.

Vikings ownership has been around the state, to places like Owatonna and Austin, and has been vocal about wanting a new stadium.

Have the Vikes come right out and said they will leave the state if they don’t get a new stadium? Some would construe it that way.

Norm Green took his Minnesota North Stars to Dallas. The Minnesota Twins were in the contraction guillotine before a stadium deal rescued the storied franchise.

The Vikings success in the 2009 season has ramped discussion of a stadium.

There has been good information published about just how much tax money an NFL team generates for a state. The numbers are staggeringly large.

But let’s get back to the principle. Proponents of a new stadium say the public commitment, when spread across all Minnesotans, amounts to couch change for each person.

Stadium opponents will say it’s crazy for the public to be involved in paying for stadiums for billionaires who pay millionaires to play fewer than 10 football games per year. They will say health care, education and transportation are higher priorities than stadiums.

What do you think? Where do you stand?
